Short trips: Woods Canyon Lake, again

Framed view of Woods Canyon Lake from the rim trail — a rock outcrop and a bright green tree in the foreground, high cirrus clouds over the far pine shore

This is where I come to escape the heat. I packed up the dogs and drove up to the Rim. I think it’s nice to have a goto spot. You know what you need/want to bring with you, so it’s less mental load. Just pack and go.

Two dogs trotting up the paved shoreline path on red leashes, tails up, pines on both sides

The loop around the lake is easy and mostly shaded. My dogs aren’t really up for the whole loop, but they can make it to the back finger. Takes a while with them; lots of stopping to read the news at every interesting rock and tree.

On the Water

A paddleboarder standing on the calm lake with a canoe nearby, framed by oak branches

The water was already busy by mid-morning — a paddleboard, a canoe, a few people out fishing from the bank. But it wasn’t a huge crowd, and you could still find quieter spaces. I got a little fishing in but only caught sunfish. Trout just didn’t want what I was offering.

The Quiet End

A quiet pine-lined inlet of the lake, greener water, soft overcast light

There was a bit of wind. Plenty to hear in the pine trees, but not so much to be bothersome. Just very pleasant.
